Sclerotherapy is considered the treatment of choice to effectively treat varicose and spider veins.

Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution directly into the problematic vein. This solution causes the vein to scar thereby forcing blood to re-route through healthier veins. The collapsed vein is reabsorbed into local tissue and eventually fades away over time.

Treated veins tend to fade within a few weeks, although occasionally it may take a month or more to see the full results. In some instances, several Sclerotherapy treatments may be needed to achieve permanent results. Your doctor will advise you on this during the course of your treatments.

Sclerotherapy is performed mainly to reduce the unsightly veins and restore confidence to the patient. In some instances the effected veins may be causing discomfort and even pain and then this treatment becomes important in order to achieve a good quality of life.

After the procedure, it’s important to walk and move your legs to prevent blood clots from forming. Compression stockings or bandages will need to be worn for about two weeks to maintain compression on the treated veins. Most people can return to their normal activities on the same day, but it’s recommended to have someone drive you home after the procedure. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for two weeks after the procedure. Additionally, sun exposure to the treated areas should be avoided during this time to prevent inflammation caused by the injections and potential dark spots on the skin, particularly for those with darker skin tones.

2 WEEK REST PERIOD

During this time Dr Zaki will request that you:

• Wear compression stockings
• Avoid strenuous exercise
• Avoid sun exposure to the treated area (any inflammation at the injection site combined with sun exposure can lead to dark spots on your skin, especially if you already have a dark skin tone).
